CHR celebrates South Africa’s National Human Rights Day (21 March 2010)
On 21 March 2010, South Africa celebrated its national Human Rights Day. The Centre for Human Rights and Development, through its JusticeMakers Team partnered with Nelspruit Lighthouse Church (NLC), in a ground breaking drive to raise awareness within the Christian community on human rights issues. NLC is located in the sleepy town of Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province. The team presented on the history of human rights, the significance of March 21 in South African history, the significance of human rights to humanity globally, the impact of HIV/AIDS on the church, and its linkages to human rights, as well as the role of the church in human rights issues. The church as a refuge for the marginalized, the poor and the violated needs to be empowered in issues related to rights in order to be able to meaningfully intervene and assist those members of society who need help. Hence the outreach to build the capacity of its members. NLC’s Pastor Alfred Kariuki expressed his gratitude for the information shared by the team, and consequently an undertaking was made between NLC and the Centre to continue such training on a regular basis, with March 21 every year being set aside as a day to tackle social, and economic issues affecting the church. As a result, a similar event will be held on 21 March 2011.
