CHR Celebrates Human Rights Day 2009 in style
On 10 December 2009, the Centre for Human Rights and Development celebrated human rights day in the Hub of Swaziland, Manzini. The event, attended by over 50 people started in the evening and finished late. The whole idea behind this celebration was to raise awareness on human rights issues on the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). To that end, the JusticeMakers Team partnered with like-minded NGOs, local law firms and the University of Swaziland Students Law Society. Participants ranged from law students, legal practitioners, magistrates, prosecutors, police officers, researchers, to NGO personnel. Despite the gloomy weather, (with stormy showers) the event was well attended.
The general feeling of the attendees was that there is a great need to take human rights to the grassroots level. Observations made were that even though some people took part in the civic education in the pre-constitutional drafting process, many did not know the content or ambit of the rights contained therein.
We had 61 roses dished out to attendees, as a token of appreciation for gracing the event. The rose symbolised the fragility of human life, the fragility of all humankind. We emphasised the fact that just like the rose which needs nourishing and care, human beings are also fragile, and can only survive if nourished with HUMAN DIGNITY.
