CHR tackles human rights for HIV positive people (18 December 2009)

On 17 and 18 December 2009, CHR personnel presented on HIV/AIDS and human rights to a gathering of 20 women involved in HIV/AIDS care and support. The workshop was organized by SWAPOL (Swaziland For Positive Living) and was held in the capital Mbabane. CHR was represented by Angelo Dube and Phakama Shili. Various aspects of human rights pertinent to people living with HIV were discussed, including remedies available in cases of breach. Participants were particularly interested in the politicization of HIV and human rights, as well as the use of the newly established Human Rights Commission by persons living with the virus. Discussions centred around state obligations under international law, regional undertakings and the country’s constitution.
