JusticeMakers rally behind UNISWA Law Week 2010
On 26 March 2010, the Students Law Society of the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) hosted the second annual Law Week, an event organised by law students to interact amongst themselves as well as with legal practitioners who are already in the field. In attendance was a representative of the National Law Society, Mr Sabelo Masuku, senior attorney Sibusiso Kubheka, non-governmental organisations such as The Centre for Human Rights and Development, The Swaziland Council of Churches, and Gays and Lesbians Living with HIV/AIDS.
Several presentations were made including welcoming remarks from the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr Kunene, an address by the Head of the Law Department, Ms Simphiwe Shabangu, and the patron of the UNISWA Law Society, Mr Angelo Dube.
The president of the UNISWA Law Society, Mr Gcina Mhlanga also expressed appreciation for the efforts put b all stakeholders towards the success of the event. Magistrate Joe Gumede presented on criminal prosecution in Swaziland, touching on case management and access to justice. Mr Mpendulo Shongwe, a law student, also presented on the 'shoot to kill' command given to police by the Prime Minister.
The presence of the gay community allowed attendees to debate issues that otherwise do not find a platform for deliberation. Their presentation touched on discrimination against gays and lesbians in spite of the non-discrimination clause in the Constitution.
Mr Phakama Shili, CHR Intern, presented on the organisational structure of our organisation and the JusticeMakers Project conducted in 2009.
