HR hosts University of Pretoria LLM students

On 6 April 2010, the Centre for Human Rights and Development organised a braai for visiting LLM Students from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In attendance were legal practitioners, attorneys, law students from the University of Swaziland, a representative of the National Law Society and other NGO representatives. CHR participates in WPP Training of Trainers Programme

The Africa Desk of Women Peace Makers Program, A Program of International Fellowship of Reconciliation held a Training of Trainers Program from 15 to 26 March 2010. The training was held at Elizabeth Lodge, Johannesburg South Africa, and it was attended by women from various countries in Southern Africa including Malawi, Cameroon, Burundi, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Swaziland which was represented by Gugu Simelane from the Centre for Human Rights and Development. Intensive training for CHR interns (13 March 2010)

On 8 - 13 March 2010, CHR interns Sibusiso Nhlabatsi and Gugu Simelane attended an intensive one-week workshop organized by the Alliance for Mayors Initiative for Combating AIDS at the Local Level (AMICAALL). CHR Celebrates Human Rights Day 2009 in style

JusticeMakers Intern elected Rotaract President (November 2009)

 

A few weeks ago, JM Intern, Phakama Shili was elected President of the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) Rotaract society. The Centre congratulates Mr Shili on this new task, and we are confident that this will open more avenues for collaboration on a number of issues. Already there are discussions around a human rights awareness project aimed at in-school youth, to be carried out by both JusticeMakers and Rotaract. Negotiations around that are still ongoing. We will keep you posted.

JusticeMakers Team Partners with Rotaract (24 Nov 2009)

 

On 24 November 2009, the JusticeMakers team joined over 30 members of the UNISWA Rotaract society to construct a kitchen for orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) in the Hawane area, north of Swaziland. In attendance were CHR Director, CHR interns Sibusiso Nhlabatsi, Gugu Simelane and Phakama Shili (now also Rotaract UNISWA President).

IBJ's Criminal Defender Training in Harare (August 2009)

 

IBJ held a Criminal Defender Training programme in Harare, Zimbabwe between 28 and 31 August 2009. The programme was organised by IBJ Zimbabwe Fellow, Innocent Maja and was held at the Wild Geese Resort in Harare. In attendance were about 70 attorneys from Zimbabwe. The group comprised both private practitioners and lawyers from the legal aid unit. Anthony John Natale (seasoned public defender and trainer from the USA), Innocent Maja (IBJ Fellow and legal practitioner), Karen Tse (IBJ Founder) and Alec Muchadehama (Legal Practitioner) and Professor Feltoe from University of Zimbabwe were some of the trainers on the programme.

Topics covered were crucial to the pursuit of fundamental rights within criminal defence. Areas of interest included the development of the theory of the case, brainstorming on the headline, making opening and closing arguments, and cross-examination.

 

Representing CHR were two of its board members, Advocate Angelo Dube and Andile Mpanza.

CHR Intern takes part in African Human Rights Moot Court (August 2009)

 

CHR was once again proud to release its intern, Gugu Simelane to attend the 18th Africa Human Rights Moot Court in Lagos Nigeria between 8 and 15 August 2009. Gugu represented the University of Swaziland team at the Moot Court. We hope the experience and skills she obtained from the exposure will come in handy for CHR's interventions, in particular the JusticeMakers Project.
